The Beginning of the Adventure

When I was a kid, I loved to bake. I was always asking my mom to buy cookie, brownie and cake mixes or chocolate chips to make homemade cookies. My favorite toy as a kid (besides my barbies and star wars figures) was my Easy-Bake oven. It was the old one that was yellow, brown and orange and you would put the pan in one side and take it out the other. As I've gotten older, I still love to bake and especially to decorate cakes. I worked as a baker in a local bakery for about 8 years. Everyone thinks that is where I learned to decorate cakes, but since I was the one baking the cakes (and other goodies) I only learned how to ice a cake and add a border. So in other words, I am pretty much self taught. Between then and now, I graduated college and have worked in an office. After 10 years being away from the bakery, I am tired of sitting at a desk and am itching to get back in the bakery! I've decided that since I don't have the experience to quit my job right now to go work as a cake decorator, I'm going to work on my skills at home and post my results here.
I've sort of been the unofficial cake maker for my family for several years now. I make my daughter's birthday cake every year, she tells me what she wants, we look on the web for some ideas and that's what I make. We've had animals, princesses, pop stars and wizards. Earlier this week while visiting the local craft store, my daughter asked me if I could teach her how to decorate a cake. Wow! So this weekend, we're going to give it a try. She said she wants to make a daisy cake, I've never made daisies, so I guess that's where I'm going to start!
